South-north migration in Italy offers an example of internal migration, but also must be considered from the same perspective as broader trends in international migration. The distances involved were often very great (over 1,000 kilometers from Sicily to Milan, for example, usually covered by fairly slow trains or ships) and Italy itself had been unified only since 1860. There were also great regional economic and social inequalities in Italy. A good argument can be made for seeing the south-north migration in Italy as occurring between two very separate territories with distinct histories, cultures, economies, and peoples, making vast migration from one area to another – despite being technically within one country.
